Bruce Highway pavement widening (Three Sisters Road to Sunbird Motel)

Overview:

Pavement widening of 2 sections of the Bruce Highway, south of Townsville, to accommodate wide centre line treatments:

  • 2.6km section, between Three Sisters Road and Billabong Sanctuary
  • 1.7km section, between Billabong Sanctuary and the Sunbird Motel.
Location:

Bruce Highway (Ayr – Townsville) between Three Sisters Road and the Sunbird Motel.

Completion:

Construction began in July 2017 and was completed in January 2018.

This upgrade has improved safety and efficiency for road users.

Supplier:

BMD Constructions Pty Ltd delivered this project on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Funding:

$9.66 million funding includes:

  • $7.728 million committed by the Australian Government
  • $1.932 million committed by the Queensland Government.

Project info

The project delivered significant improvements for motorists, by strengthening and widening the existing pavement, between Ayr and Townsville. Wide centre line treatments, which have been shown to reduce the occurrence of head-on collisions by up to 50%, were also installed.

BMD Constructions are also delivering a nearby intersection on behalf of LendLease, as part of the Elliot Springs residential development. These were are ongoing, expected to be completed in mid-2018.
