Project info

The current project scope includes:

  • 4 lanes in each direction between Kamerunga Road and Harley Street
  • upgrading the Kamerunga Road intersection from single to double through lanes on the Cairns Western Arterial Road, and closing the right-turn out of Kamerunga Road with dedicated turn lanes
  • upgrading the Harley Street intersection from single to double through lanes, with expanded capacity for turn lanes on the Cairns Western Arterial Road and new U-turn facilities
  • upgrading Hythe Street to include dedicated bike lane, shoulder and turning lane. The right-turn facility will be removed making it left-in, left-out only with a raised median along the Cairns Western Arterial Road separating north and southbound traffic
  • TMR will also upgrade pedestrian access to bus stops on either side of the Cairns Western Arterial Road and install signalised crossing facilities at the upgraded Harley Street intersection to improve safety.
  • bike rider and pedestrian upgrades. These include:
    • a new concrete pathway on Cowley Street to extend the existing concrete pathway improving access for school children and residents using the bus stop on the eastern side of the Cairns Western Arterial Road
    • removing the old bus stop from the north western side of Harley Street on the Cairns Western Arterial Road (deemed dangerous for pedestrians and buses) and relocating it to a new position on the south western side of Harley Street between Kamerunga Road and Harley Street. A new path will link the existing path to this new bus stop
    • new concrete paths between Hythe Street and Harley Street and this new bus stop, to ensure safe access.
