Captain Cook Bridge maintenance works


The Department of Transport and Main Roads is currently undertaking maintenance works on the Captain Cook Bridge.

These works are to prolong the life of the bridge.

The southbound lanes of the Captain Cook Bridge will be closed for maintenance between 11:30pm Friday 26 June and 5am Monday 29 June. Southbound traffic only can travel toll-free on the Go Between Bridge and Clem7 during this time. Northbound lanes of the Captain Cook Bridge will remain open.

Long delays are expected. Plan ahead and follow the detour signs to avoid the area.

Maintenance will take place on both sides, inside and on top of the bridge at multiple locations during the works. 

As part of maintenance works, heavy vehicle access changes will be in place changed on 1 December 2019. Heavy vehicles over 33 tonnes must now travel in the centre 2 lanes of the bridge in each direction. 

The Captain Cook Bridge will also be closed to all traffic, weather and construction conditions permitting, on 4 separate occasions over the coming weeks. These full closures are required to allow workers to safely undertake these critical maintenance activities.

Direction of closure Timing
Southbound closure  11.30pm Friday 26 June to 5am Monday 29 June^

^During the closure tolls will be waived for motorists travelling southbound only on the Go-Between Bridge and in the Clem 7 tunnel.  

Works include:

  • jacking the Captain Cook Bridge deck to allow for maintenance works
  • replacing the bearings at the southern end of the Captain Cook Bridge with new bespoke bearings.
Expected impacts:
  • Changed traffic conditions on Captain Cook Bridge will include closing all relevant directional lanes during maintenance works. 
  • Nearby residents/businesses may experience short term impacts including noise, flashing lights, light/s, dust, vibration and odour.
  • At peak times, works may impact pedestrian and bike rider access along the detour route. For safety, bike riders may be asked to dismount at certain locations. Pedestrians and bike riders are reminded to follow the direction of the Queensland Police, traffic controllers and signage on site.

For motorists:

  • During the closures, tolls will be waived for motorists travelling in the direction of the closure on the Go-Between Bridge and in the Clem 7 tunnel.
  • There will be detours to help motorists reach their destination. 
  • Officers from the Queensland Police Service, traffic control and signage will be in place as required. 
TMR encourages you to consider an alternate route during closures as there may be extended traffic delays. You should also allow extra time when planning your travel.
