  • Enhanced route reliability and reduced road closures during the wet season and instances of vehicles getting bogged in wet unsealed pavements.
  • Reduced damage and stress to livestock by reducing road roughness and dust generation.
  • Reduced whole-of-life asset management costs.
Supplier:

Project info

On 24 October 2016, the Australian Government announced the commitment of $100 million in funding to improve roads essential to cattle transportation. This is known as the Northern Australia Beef Roads Program.

The Diamantina Developmental Road between Boulia and Dajarra has been identified as a key strategic route supporting the economic development of the beef industry in central western Queensland. This project has an important role in unlocking the potential of the beef supply chain. It is also a key route supporting development in northern Australia.

As part of the Beef Roads Program, this project will widen 2 sections of sealed road on the Diamantina Developmental Road between Boulia and Dajarra to improve transportation of cattle to market. Works commenced in February 2019 about 5km north of Boulia.

The works include rehabilitating and widening the existing road to a 6m seal. This maintains the existing 100km/h speed limit. It will allow safer overtaking opportunities for the eclectic mix of vehicles, road trains and caravans that frequent this road. Widening will create a more forgiving roadside environment with a more resilient pavement and the wider shoulders and strengthened pavement will be less prone to damage from wet weather.
