Flinders Highway widening (Townsville - Torrens Creek)

Work to widen a 6.5km section at Mingela and Sellheim, north of Charters Towers, started in June 2018, and was completed in May 2019.

Planning work to widen and strengthen an additional section of the Flinders Highway at this location is underway. 


This upgrade will improve safety and efficiency for road users, and reduce road maintenance costs.


F K Gardner and Sons Pty Ltd delivered the Mingela to Sellheim project on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads.


On 24 October 2016, the Australian Government announced funding for the Flinders Highway widening (Townsville—Torrens Creek) project under the Northern Australia Roads Program (NARP).

The NARP forms part of the White Paper for Developing Northern Australia, a $600 million commitment to enable upgrades to high priority roads in northern Australia essential to the movement of people and freight to support economic development in the north.

Projects under the Northern Australia Roads Program are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments on an 80:20 basis. 

The $22.2 million Flinders Highway rehabilitation comprises $17.8 million funding provided by the Australian Government and $4.4 million provided by the Queensland Government.

The $1.3 million School Street intersection works, completed in conjunction with the Mingela to Sellheim widening project, was funded by the Queensland government through the Safer Roads Sooner program. 

North Queensland Region - Northern District

Project info

In June 2018, work started to widen and install wide centre line treatment on a 6.5 km section between Mingela and Sellheim, north of Charters Towers.  Dedicated right-turn lanes were also installed at the Dotswood and Mingela Road intersections to improve safety. Safety was also improved at the School Street intersection by upgrading the intersection layout and installing dedicated turning lanes. The project was completed in May 2019. 

Planning work to widen an additional section of highway is currently underway, with construction timing yet to be determined.
