Project update December 2019

Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3A is the extension to Burleigh Heads of a world class public transport system that is currently providing locals and visitors with an alternative way to move around the Gold Coast.

Light rail has exceeded all expectations particularly in relation to patronage. In July 2019, G:link trams carried over 1 million paying passengers, a monthly record and since 2014 there has been more than 46 million paid passenger trips on trams.

The light rail system is designed to be delivered in stages to respond to the growth of Australia’s sixth largest city, Stage 3A will expand the tram network to 27km from Helensvale to Burleigh Heads. It will connect communities with business and jobs, hospitals and medical facilities, education, shopping, dining, entertainment and sporting centres.

Like previous stages the $709 million extension to Burleigh Heads will be jointly funded, commitments have now been received from the Australian Government of $269 million and the City of Gold Coast $91.5 million, with the balance of funds committed by the state.

This critical infrastructure will help the Gold Coast cope with the expected population growth over the next 2 decades.

By ensuring a greater proportion of trips along the coastal strip are made by public transport rather than single occupant vehicles G:link trams can help reduce traffic congestion as well as lessen demand for car parking.

Current status

On behalf of the Queensland Government G:link operator GoldlinQ has been appointed to conduct an industry briefing and Expressions-of-Interest commencing on Monday 9 December 2019.  GoldlinQ will oversee procurement, construction and maintain the extension to Burleigh Heads. Suitably qualified construction contractors interested in participating in the Expressions of Interest process for Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3A should visit and register their details.
GoldlinQ will evaluate the Expressions of Interest and shortlist organisations to progress to the next phase of the procurement process–Request for Tender.
Following a competitive tender process, a contract for the design and construction of Stage 3A is expected to be awarded in late 2020. The preferred bidder will construct the infrastructure required with an expectation to engage local workers and industry to work on the project.
The extension could be operational by 2023.

Business questionnaire

Specific Stage 3A project requirements have been developed to ensure that the appointed contractors reduce and manage construction impacts as much as possible and pro-actively engage with businesses.

Businesses and the community will receive regular information about the Stage 3A construction program to allow them to better manage changes in their local area.

Before major construction, businesses along the Gold Coast Highway alignment will be contacted and asked to participate in a detailed questionnaire.

Community engagement

In August 2018 the project conducted community engagement.

Feedback received from the community was:

  • nearly 7 in 10 want more public transport services preferring light rail over bus
  • 86% support Stage 3A and want the extension to the Gold Coast Airport as soon as possible
  • 72% of Stage 3A corridor residents support future light rail extensions
  • 80% of Stage 3A corridor businesses support future light rail extensions and want it as soon as possible.

In the past few years local media polls have also shown similar results.
