Gympie Road / Dixon Street / Hall Street intersection upgrade

Overview:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has started construction to transform the Gympie Road roundabout with Dixon and Hall Streets into a signalised intersection. The $4.5 million upgrade is funded under TMR’s Safer Roads Sooner program to reduce the number of crashes occurring at this intersection.

Location:

Brisbane-Woodford Road (Gympie Road), Strathpine.

Completion:

Works are scheduled to be complete by December 2019, subject to weather and construction conditions.

Benefits:

The project will transform the existing roundabout into a 4-way signalised intersection. Safety at the busy roundabout near the Strathpine Westfield Centre will be bolstered by installing traffic lights. With a high number of crashes recorded at this roundabout, coupled with Strathpine’s growth rate, this upgrade will not only improve safety but will cater for traffic in the busy industrial and business precinct into the future.

Funding:

The $4.5 million upgrade is funded by the Queensland Government under the Targeted Road Safety Program, Safer Roads Sooner sub-program.

Regions:
North Coast and Wide Bay-Burnett Region - North Coast District

Project info

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has commenced transformation of the Gympie Road roundabout with Dixon and Hall Streets into a signalised intersection. Construction started from 18 March 2019 after preliminary works were finalised in early March.

TMR sought feedback from key stakeholders on a proposed design for the upgrade in 2017. In response to feedback, several improvements were made to the design. These include adding dedicated lanes for right-turn and through traffic movements from Hall Street (north), providing a U-turn facility on Gympie Road (southbound), and installing signalised pedestrian crossings at all intersection approaches.

Key project features include:

  • upgrading the existing roundabout into a 4-way signalised intersection
  • extending the centre median on Gympie Road to remove unsafe right-turns into and out of Hall Street (south). This means access to Hall Street (south) will be left-in and left-out only
  • providing dedicated lanes for all traffic movements from Hall Street (north)
  • replacing the existing signalised crossings on Gympie Road with staged pedestrian crossings at the new traffic signals
  • installing new signalised pedestrian crossings on Dixon and Hall Streets
  • providing a facility on Gympie Road for southbound traffic to U-turn.

What to expect throughout construction:

  • Lane closures and short-term disruptions. Temporary traffic signals will be installed at the Gympie Road and Mecklem Street intersection to assist and direct road users when works to remove the roundabout begin.
  • To ensure access to Dixon Street is maintained, motorists will be directed via Mecklem and Jockers Street or Learmonth Street and signage will be in place to assist motorists. To view these changed traffic conditions please view the diversion layout.
  • Noise and possible dust from construction activities and heavy machinery can be expected. Reversing beepers and flashing lights are a safety requirement and will be used at times during working hours.
  • Nearby residents and business operators can expect increased construction traffic.
  • Some on-street parking will be temporarily removed on Mecklem Street to allow for traffic diversions during construction. Parking will re-open once the project is completed.
  • Two on-street car parks will be removed on Hall Street (north) permanently, to ensure visibility for motorists is maintained once the traffic signals are operational.
  • Priority access and entry through the work zone will be given to emergency vehicles.

TMR understands roadworks can be frustrating for the local community and will endeavour to complete these works as quickly as possible. We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.
