Project info

The project delivered strengthening and widening improvements to 25km of the Landsborough Highway. The upgrade was completed on a section of highway between Longreach and Winton, starting about 8km north of Longreach.

The existing seal on this section of highway was 7m wide and was increased to a width of 9m, providing 2 3.5m lanes with a 1m shoulder on either side. The project also included intersection and access upgrades, widening and upgrades to the drainage structures, concrete batter protection works to the approaches of Darr River Bridge, and guardrail works.

The key intersection and access upgrades included Silsoe Road, Macsland, Leander Red Rocks and Darr River Road.
As a result of this project, Dingo Creek and other low-level crossings now have improved flood immunity.

Freight movement is also being improved between Brisbane and Darwin, with increased reliability and efficiency through beef and sheep grazing areas, and Galilee Basin coal and energy sectors.

Construction commenced in April 2019 with works completed in early April 2020.

With the release of the Australian Government White Paper on Developing Northern Australia in June 2015, it was recognised that infrastructure is critical to growth and supporting the development of new locations or industries to improve productivity and accessibility for current and future development. The $600 million Northern Australia Roads Program (NARP) is an initiative of the White Paper to fund high priority projects, such as this, in northern Australia.
