Project info

The department is progressing investigations for a range of major upgrades in the area of the Sunshine Motorway – Mooloolah River interchange, including expanded lane connections, new river crossing and intersection upgrades.

Background

Preliminary planning is complete and a preferred planning option has been developed for a new Mooloolah River interchange and the department is currently preserving the land required to accommodate the project.

The preferred planning option includes:

  • a new interchange and Mooloolah River crossing to connect to Kawana Way. This crossing will be compatible with a future connection to the proposed Kawana Arterial Road
  • a new northbound connection from Nicklin Way to Brisbane Road
  • an upgrade of the east-west section of the Sunshine Motorway from 2 to 4 lanes between the Kawana Way interchange and the new Mooloolah River interchange
  • a direct connection to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital precinct via a new 2-lane road connecting Kawana Way at Parrearra and crossing the Mooloolah River connecting into the new Mooloolah River interchange
  • a new direct connection for northbound traffic from Nicklin Way to Brisbane Road and Mooloolaba
  • a new link to accommodate local traffic movements between Brisbane Road and Karawatha Drive.

Preferred planning option

Project benefits

When constructed, the preferred planning option will:

  • reduce crashes and traffic weaving on the Sunshine Motorway near Mountain Creek
  • improve connectivity for the Sunshine Coast region with new Mooloolah River crossings
  • improve capacity and travel time reliability.
