Project info

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has started construction activities to improve motorist and pedestrian safety on the section of Morayfield Road between Lindsay Road and Oakey Flat Road intersections.

As part of the Morayfield Road and Beerburrum Road Route Safety project, a number of safety improvement treatments will be implemented to create safer and more efficient intersections for pedestrians and motorists, improve traffic flow and ease congestion on Morayfield Road as well as provide increased storage for right-turn queues at intersections where current storage capacity is limited.  The below safety improvements will be implemented at the following locations.

Morayfield Mega Centre / Lindsay Road intersection

  • Installing a new pedestrian crossing on Lindsay Road (northern side) and at the Morayfield Mega Centre access to connect with existing footpaths.
  • Realigning the left-turn slip lane into the Morayfield Mega Centre to improve visibility.

Supercentre Complex intersection

  • Modifying the existing traffic signal phasing to allow fully-controlled right-turn movements into the Super Centre and Homemaker Centre complexes from Morayfield Road.
  • Extending the northbound right-turn lane to provide additional storage capacity for motorists’ turning into the Homestyle Homemaker Centre.
  • Providing 4 zebra pedestrian crossings, one on each leg of the intersection.
  • Install tactile guidance markers to assist visually impaired pedestrians at all pram ramps and signalised crossings.

Gaffield Street intersection

  • Providing new pedestrian footpaths on the eastern side (Cul-de-sac side) of Morayfield Road, to connect to the existing footpath.
  • Upgrading traffic signals to include new signalised pedestrian crossing on Gaffield Street (East).

Walkers Road intersection

  • Extending the dual right-turn lanes on Morayfield Road to provide increased storage capacity for vehicles turning into Walkers Road.
  • Removing the U-turn facility on Morayfield Road at the Walkers Road intersection to improve intersection efficiency, increase safety and limit delays for pedestrians crossing Morayfield Road. The U-turn facility will remain in place at the Gaffield Street intersection.
  • Extending the right-turn lane on Walkers Road to provide increased storage capacity for vehicles turning into Morayfield Road.
  • Installing new staged pedestrian crossing on Morayfield road (northern side) to improve pedestrian safety.
  • Relocating the pedestrian crossing on the left turn slip from Walkers Road to Morayfield Road (northern side).
  • Installing new pedestrian crossing on the left turn slip from Morayfield Road to Walkers Road (southern side).

Oakey Flat Road into Station Road

  • Signalising Oakey Flat Road intersection with Morayfield Road.
  • Providing a signalised pedestrian crossing on Oakey Flat Road.
  • Installing a new cycle lane on the western side of Morayfield Road across the intersection.
  • Extend western side footpath to provide connectivity to the signalised pedestrian crossing on Oakey Flat Road.

Community info

Construction is scheduled to commence in June 2019 and is anticipated to take approximately five months to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting. Works will progressively roll out across the intersections and will generally be undertaken at night between 6pm and 6am, Monday to Friday, to minimise impacts to motorists and businesses.

Partial lane closures, traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and road signage will be in place during the construction activities to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers. Motorists may experience minor delays during these works and are encouraged to drive to the changed traffic conditions, obeying signage, reduced speed limits and traffic controller directions at all times. Variable Messaging Signage (VMS) boards will also be in place at the approaches to the work site.

Priority access and entry through the work zone will be given to emergency vehicles

Although every effort will be made to reduce impacts, nearby businesses and residents may experience some noise while work is occurring near their property. TMR understands roadworks can be frustrating for nearby businesses and road users and acknowledges the cooperation and patience of stakeholders during construction.

Walkers Road and Oakey Flat Road intersection works

Construction activities at Walkers Road and Oakey Flat Road intersections with Morayfield Road will be coordinated with the Moreton Bay Regional Council works at the Oakey Flat Road intersection with Walkers Road. TMR will work with Council to minimise impacts to road users and businesses in the area.
