Accessibility upgrade works at Maryborough

Starting later this year, the NGR fleet will be progressively sent to Maryborough to undergo accessibility upgrades at the Downer rail plant.

Timeline of accessibility upgrade works at Maryborough

  • January 2019 – arrival of NGR train MU1 for refit and familiarisation.
  • Mid-2019 – start of construction of infrastructure improvements.
  • Late 2019 – first NGR train arrives to begin installation of accessibility upgrades.
  • 2020 – first upgraded NGR train to begin passenger services in South East Queensland
  • 2024 – final NGR train upgraded and completion of NGR accessibility upgrades at Maryborough.

Infrastructure improvements

The Queensland Government is funding $10 million infrastructure improvements to the Downer rail plant in Maryborough to enable multiple NGR trains to undergo simultaneous accessibility upgrades at the site.

The initial planning and design works for these improvements are underway, with construction due to begin in April 2019.

These infrastructure improvement works will include:

  • upgrades to overhead power lines to support 6-car static testing
  • installation of a new section of track to support weighing, levelling and water egress testing
  • installation of a new run-around road and an additional spur to ease shunting restrictions and improve stabling capacity
  • additional cranes
  • general infrastructure upgrades to support the rectification work.

Transporting NGR trains to Maryborough

When the accessibility upgrades program starts later this year, NGR trains will be able to travel up to Maryborough under their own power on the electrified North Coast line.

An NGR train (MU1) towed to the rail plant in January 2019 by an Aurizon diesel locomotive will be the only unit requiring a tow.

MU1 was sent to Maryborough to:

  • undergo a refit to ensure it is ready for passenger services after an extensive on-track testing schedule
  • provide the Downer staff at Maryborough a chance to familiarise with NGR trains before the accessibility upgrade program starts later this year.

MU1 will undergo an accessibility upgrade later in the program.
