Project info

Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road is a four-way intersection which services local commuters, freight and tourist traffic. Peachester Road also operates as an arterial road for a significant number of heavy vehicles.

This intersection caters for a mix of road users including pedestrians accessing the Beerwah Primary School and heavy vehicles accessing commercial facilities along Old Gympie Road. Over 7,800 vehicles use this section of Peachester Road each day. In its current configuration, the intersection is expected to reach its traffic capacity in the coming years.

This project will improve the intersection safety and capacity through the following treatments:

  • traffic signal installation
  • road widening to accommodate additional turning lanes
  • associated vegetation clearing to facilitate road widening including removing trees on Peachester Road just east of the intersection
  • signalised pedestrian crossing facilities
  • improved access for heavy vehicles to navigate through the intersection.

A requirement under TMR's Environmental Management System is to review and assess all projects to determine the risks in relation to environmental impacts. The project team will work with environmental and cultural heritage stakeholders to ensure measures are taken to mitigate any impacts.

Provision for B-double truck movements at the intersection will be included as part of the upgrade design. However, permits for B-double travel will continue to be based on an assessment of the entire route travelled.

TMR will also undertake approximately 1.5km of resurfacing works on Peachester Road from the intersection to the east, through to the Blackbutt Street intersection. This resurfacing work will create a smoother surface for road users.
