Project info

The Queensland Government has allocated a total funding package of $30 million to upgrade the Petrie roundabout at the intersection of Anzac Avenue, Dayboro Road and Gympie Road. This includes funding for detailed design, property acquisition and construction. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) began detailed design work in July 2018.

The roundabout currently carries more than 17,000 vehicles per day, including heavy freight vehicles, and is a major bottleneck in peak traffic periods. Significant regional and local developments, such as the University of the Sunshine Coast campus and ‘The Mill at Moreton Bay’, will further increase traffic demand at the intersection in the future.

The much-needed upgrade will cater for existing and future traffic demands, reduce the time motorists spend stuck in queues and improve safety for all road users. It will also improve connectivity between key employment, industrial, educational and residential areas in the Moreton Bay Region.

During early planning in 2016, TMR developed a concept plan which included replacing the roundabout with a signalised intersection. Current detailed design work has reviewed and built on this early planning to develop a preferred design for the Petrie Roundabout Upgrade.

Key features of the preferred design include:

  • replacing the existing roundabout with a signalised T-intersection
  • widening Anzac Avenue, Dayboro Road and Gympie Road on approach to the intersection
  • providing 2 signalised right-turn lanes from Anzac Avenue to Dayboro Road
  • installing a left-turn slip lane from Dayboro Road to Anzac Avenue
  • providing 2 signalised right-turn lanes from Dayboro Road to Gympie Road
  • installing a left-turn slip lane from Gympie Road to Dayboro Road
  • providing a signalised U-turn facility on Gympie Road for local access to Mill Street
  • improving pedestrian and cyclist facilities, including on-road cycle lanes, shared footpaths and signalised crossings.

View the preferred design and project newsletter for further information.

Community engagement

TMR invited the community to provide feedback on the preferred design in October 2018. The opportunity to submit feedback closed on 16 November 2018.

Community feedback is important and will help TMR to finalise the design for the Petrie Roundabout Upgrade. Once feedback has been assessed, we will refine the preferred design, as appropriate, and develop a final design for the upgrade.

We will notify the community of the final design by late 2019.
