Cape Gloucester area boat ramp

Overview:

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will upgrade the existing boat ramp at Dingo Beach in the Cape Gloucester area in partnership with Whitsunday Regional Council.

Location:

Cape Gloucester.

Funding:

$1.4 million.

Project info

The Cape Gloucester area, 165km by north of Mackay and 75km (by road) south of Bowen, is currently only serviced by a part-tide boat ramp at Dingo Beach.

With consistent demand over the years for a boat ramp in the area, the Recreational Boating Facilities Demand Forecasting Study 2017 recommended a new boating facility in the Cape Gloucester area as a high priority for the Whitsunday Regional Council area. The Queensland Government has provided $1.4 million towards this project.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads consulted with the local community in May - June 2018 to understand their views about where the new or upgraded boat ramp should be located. A clear message was received from the community that the preferred option is to replace the existing degraded ramp at Dingo Beach.

Read the community consultation outcomes.

On 14 August 2018, it was announced that the Dingo Beach boat ramp will receive an upgrade with funding allocated by the Queensland Government for the project.

Following engineering investigations of the Dingo Beach boat ramp site, some slight amendments were made to the initial concept plan. These changes were deemed necessary as the most feasible design to suit the location.

The works include upgrading the existing single lane boat ramp to a two-lane facility. It is also intended to excavate a small basin at the toe of the ramp to improve launching at lower tides.

Timing of works

On-site construction is due to commence in late-October 2019 with completion of the upgraded facility planned in late-November 2019, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The boat ramp will be closed for public use during construction.  The project team will keep the community informed on timing of construction and the boat ramp closure as soon as this information is available.
