Project info

The Samford to Ferny Grove Cycle Link will provide a new cycle path between the Ferny Grove Rail Station and Samford Village.

The purpose of the project is to deliver a high-quality cycling corridor that provides a safe, fast and direct cycle connection between Samford and Ferny Grove.

The project will be delivered in 2 stages – Stage 1 (Ferny Grove Rail Station to Petersen Road, Samford) and Stage 2 (Petersen Road to Samford Village).

Stage 1

Stage 1 provides a link between Ferny Grove Rail Station and Petersen Road via sections of a dedicated cycleway, as well as on-road sections through local streets. The project involved improvement works to the existing cycle path along Lanita Road to connect to Samford Forest. A 1.5km path through the forest was sealed, to connect with McLean Road South. Some lighting and signs were installed at the Camp Mountain Road and McLean Road intersection, and a new section of off-road path connects McLean Road North with Petersen Road. This route was officially opened on 12 March 2016.

Stage 2

Extensive planning for Stage 2 of the project is complete following extensive technical investigations and rigorous community engagement.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads appointed WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff to undertake planning activities for Stage 2 to connect Samford Village to Stage 1 of the Samford to Ferny Grove Cycle Link.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff identified 3 possible route options for Stage 2 and conducted consultation with the community on these options from Tuesday 1 November to Monday 21 November 2016. Details on each of the route options is provided in the Samford to Ferny Grove Cycle Link Stage 2 Project Flyer.

Planning for Stage 2 of the project is complete following extensive technical investigations and rigorous community engagement.

The planning identified key safety improvements on Petersen Road, Camp Mountain Road and Samford Road to improve cyclist safety and connectivity between Stage 1 of the cycle link and Samford Village.

On-road cycling improvements

Work will begin in early February 2018 to improve connectivity between Stage 1 of the Cycle Link and Samford Village. Signs and road markings will be installed at key points along Petersen Road, Camp Mountain Road and Samford Road to clearly mark the connection to Samford Village.

These improvements will include yellow bicycle symbols along the road surface to improve awareness of the shared zones and directional signs to help cyclists navigate the route.

Work is expected to take approximately 2 weeks to complete, weather and construction conditions permitting.

$85,000 has been allocated from the Queensland Government’s Principal Cycle Network Plan South East Queensland to fund these project improvements. This funds cycling facilities on both state and local transport corridors through a program of grants and infrastructure capital works programs.
