Project info

The Oakey to Miles Safety Upgrade project consists of 3 contracts to be rolled out between 2017 to 2019.

The upgrades aim to improve the safety of all road users by reducing the incidence of fatal or serious injury crashes on the Warrego Highway. The safety improvement works were identified using road safety criteria such as road accident history and crash likelihood or severity, as well as motorist feedback.

The project consists of the following packages:

Package 1

Wide centreline treatment (where the existing pavement width is sufficient), pavement repairs and defined town entry treatments. The wide centreline treatment was line-marking only. Jondaryan, Macalister, Warra and Brigalow were chosen for town entry treatments.

Package 2, 3 and 5

Packages includes:

  • Widening existing road formation east and west of Brigalow.
  • Upgrade of 6 intersections through provision of right turn lanes between Oakey and Miles - at Devon Park Road, Station Street (Jondaryan), Bowenville-Norwin Road, Newton Stephen Road, Macalister Bell Road / Macalister Wilkie Creek Road (Macalister), and Brownlies Road (Columboola).
  • Identified safety works including intersection and other signage upgrades, identification and removal of roadside hazards such as trees, edge drops, batter slopes and culvert drops.

Community info

The Warrego Highway Upgrade Program (WHUP) is a $635 million package of 15 approved projects between Toowoomba and Miles that are planned to be delivered between 2014 and mid-2019. The WHUP is funded 80% by the federal government and 20% by the state government.

Travel times will be impacted by these projects. Local, regional and statewide motorists and heavy vehicle operators using the Warrego Highway between Toowoomba and Miles will need to factor in extra travel time due to multiple Warrego Highway upgrade sites over the next 2 years.
