Active transport infrastructure benefits studies

Measuring the benefits of active travel (June 2016)

• This study sought to develop survey instruments, monetary unit values and a practitioner-friendly cost-benefit analysis (CBA) tool to assist in evaluating transport projects after their completion.
• The report demonstrates the use of these tools by conducting evaluations of completed active transport infrastructure projects in South East Queensland.

Benefits of inclusion of active transport in infrastructure projects – Report (June 2011)

• This study sought to develop a methodology to evaluate the benefits of incorporating active transport projects in wider infrastructure projects.
• This report provides a summary of project benefits and unit values, drawing upon best practice road and public transport appraisals, adapted, where possible, to reflect the nuances of active transport in Queensland.

Infrastructure evaluations

Independent evaluations of active transport infrastructure commissioned by the Department of Transport and Main Roads are provided below by region. Input data for the evaluations was gathered using intercept surveys, video-based manual counts, travel time runs, GPS trip data and other methods.

Cairns

Evaluation of Mann St Cycleway, Cairns (June 2018)

• The Mann St Cycleway extends from Tills Street in Westcourt to the existing Lily Creek path and the railway line near the city centre. The cycleway runs alongside Mann Street and Minnie Street and is physically protected from the roadway.

Brinsmead-Redlynch Connector Path, Cairns – Evaluation (November 2016)

• The Brinsmead-Redlynch shared path extends over a distance of around 5km between Brinsmead and Redlynch in the western suburbs of Cairns.

Northern Cycleway, Cairns – Evaluation (December 2016)

• Evaluation of the extension of the Cairns Northern Cycleway from Whitfield Street (Aeroglen) to Lower Freshwater Road (Freshwater).

Brisbane

Moggill Road cycle bridge – Evaluation (September 2016)

• Evaluation of the cyclist-only bridge on the Centenary Cycleway over Moggill Road (Indooroopilly).

Ferny Grove to Samford cycle link night-time path delineation treatments - Evaluation (May 2016)

• This evaluation considered the Ferny Grove to Samford Cycle Link shared use paths and the potential benefits of treatments that improve delineation at night.
  The 2 treatments considered were:
  • solar powered stud lights in the path pavement
  • glow-in-the-dark surface coatings that luminesce during night-time.

• To assess the possible benefits, night time riding trials with experienced riders were undertaken.

Norman Creek pedestrian and cycle bridge – Evaluation (September 2016)

• Evaluation of the Norman Creek Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge. The bridge connects Hilton Street in East Brisbane with Norman Avenue in Norman Park to provide a quiet street alternative to Wynnum Road for bicycle riders traveling from the CBD to the Wynnum/Manly area.

North Brisbane Bikeway stage 1B – Evaluation (November 2016)

• Evaluation of North Brisbane Bikeway Stage 1B, extending approximately 920m from Federation Street, Bowen Hills to Somerset Street, Windsor.

Samford – Ferny Grove cycle link stage 1 – Evaluation (November 2016)

• Evaluation of the Samford to Ferny Grove Cycle Link Stage 1, consisting of 1.3km from Lanita Road (Ferny Grove) to Lanita Court and 0.4km from McLean Road to Petersen Road.

Veloway 1, Stage D – Evaluation (May 2018)

• Evaluation of Stage D of the Veloway 1 bikeway, extending from south of O’Keefe St (Buranda) to Lewisham St (Greenslopes).
• In conjunction with subsequent project stages, the Veloway 1 will provide a contiguous high-quality cycleway from Eight Mile Plains to the Brisbane River.

Moreton Bay Region

Ted Smout Bridge, Brighton to Redcliffe linemarking for cycling and pedestrian crossing - Evaluation (December 2017)

• Evaluation of the effectiveness of modifications to the linemarking on the cyclist and pedestrian crossing of the Ted Smout Bridge between Brighton and Redcliffe.

Moreton Bay Rail Link Shared Pathway - Evaluation (November 2016)

• Evaluation of the Moreton Bay Rail Link shared pathway, running alongside the rail link and extending 12km from Petrie station to Kippa-Ring station.

Sunshine Coast

Sixth Avenue bicycle lanes in Maroochydore - Evaluation (May 2018)

• Evaluation of bicycle improvements along a 2.2km corridor along Sixth Avenue and the Esplanade from Aerodrome Road to First Avenue in Maroochydore.

David Low Way bicycle lanes - Evaluation (December 2016)

• Evaluation of on-road bicycle lanes installed on David Low Way between Sunshine Coast Airport and Peregian Beach.

Eudlo Creek Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge – Evaluation (January 2018)

• Evaluation of the Eudlo Creek cycle and pedestrian bridge alongside David Low Way.

Mooloolaba to Minyama separated bikeway – Evaluation (December 2016)

• Evaluation of the Mooloolaba to Minyama Separated Bikeway Stages 1, 3 and 4a from Neerim Road to Culbara Street (390m), across Tuckers Creek and along Bindaree Crescent (250m).

Intercept Surveys

Centenary Cycleway, Darra – Intercept survey of path users (September 2016)

• Video-based manual counts and intercept surveys of users of the Centenary Cycleway were undertaken on the shared path at Darra near the crossing of Warrender Street and the railway line.
