Video transcript
Tejas Goyal (Kmart): So while working with my dad, actually, he wanted me to take over the business you know, and I wanted to do something off my own two feet rather than actually working for someone or something which has been done by someone and just taking care of it. So that actually triggered that, that now I want to do something totally different, that's not for me. I came to Australia, started studying and then once I actually got into supply chain and logistics, actually that's something which I really have the passion for and enjoyed. And once you start enjoying what you're doing, you just love doing, it doesn't feel like when you're coming to work, you have to come to work, you just want to come to work and that was the difference for me and that just clicked that, now that's the job for me.
Callum Fraser (Transport and Main Roads): The transport and logistics industry supports all other industries, and yet it's often hidden from view for young people. We wanted to find another vehicle to show off the opportunities in the industry and we decided that Work Inspiration would be a great way to show those opportunities.
Work Inspiration is an evolution of traditional work experience. It involves three key insights, All About Me, Behind the Scenes and Careers Happen.
Insight one: All About Me, is a personality quiz that serves two purposes. It helps the students to find out a little bit more about their skills, aptitudes and interests, but it also helps us link them to the right people in the business to explore what careers might suit them best.
Insight two: Behind the Scenes, is an opportunity for students to experience industry in action and we wanted to show the students the supply chain as a whole. At the Port of Brisbane, the staff from Patrick Corporation shared the significant investment required to keep the port operational and the focus on workplace health and safety in all areas of the business. The students observed the ships arriving and the containers being transferred from the vessels to the trucks and onwards onto the distribution centre. At the Kmart Distribution Centre, students saw three businesses working together to get the product into the marketplace. Young Guns Container Crew unloaded the wholesale containers, the Kmart warehouse staff picked and packed the orders and Toll Group delivered those orders to the retail stores.
Insight three is Careers Happen, where students interview staff members about their career journey. They learn where the staff have come from, how they got into the industry, the skills they have learnt along the way and why they love transport and logistics.
Kristina Smith (Student): I think the main thing I'll take away from this experience is just, I thought that everything was still done by man labour and it's incredible to see the amount of technology and how it's like an ever expanding business.
Lachlan Deer (Student): Before this, before the program, I thought that the industry had no jobs available for me. I thought that there weren't many options open, but after this I think that there's a lot of opportunities for me, especially with the technology advancements.
Tamzin Edwards (Student): Work Inspiration has shown me how big the industry actually is and the variety of roles there is and the actual level of skill that is required for each role. It' just bigger than I thought it would be and more important.
Tejas Goyal (Kmart): One thing that really drives a person is the passion, what you really like and what you want to do. The other thing is also that you know, nobody is born extraordinary, you know, we are all ordinary people, but some people do their ordinary jobs in an extraordinary way. And that's what you got to do, is to really do a job in an extraordinary way so that you become an extraordinary person.
