Excess mass and dimensions

On 10 February 2014 the Heavy Vehicle National Law 2012 (HVNL) commenced, replacing existing laws governing the operation of all vehicles over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is now responsible for administering all regulatory services under the HVNL, including vehicle mass and dimensions.

Regulation mass and dimension limits are detailed in the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation 2013, which is administered by the NHVR.  More information regarding regulation mass and dimension limits is available from the NHVR’s Mass, Dimension and Loading page.

Although it is necessary to minimise damage to structures and pavements by fixing regulation mass and dimension limits, it is also recognised that some concessions must be given to the transport industry to allow the movement by road of heavy and large vehicles and loads.
