Caboolture Connection Road, improve safety

A $7.5 million route strategy package improved safety along sections of Caboolture Connection Road (Lower King Street and King Street) between the Bruce Highway and D’Aguilar Highway.

The route safety strategy enhanced road safety by implementing high-benefit, cost-effective safety upgrades to address known and potential crash locations on Lower King Street and King Street.

Funding

A $7.5 million suite of packages was delivered as part of the Queensland Government’s Targeted Road Safety Initiatives Program. Investment ID 424161.

Current Status

Lower King Street between Bruce Highway and Dux Street

Safety improvement works were delivered in 2 stages. 

Stage 1 works were completed in August 2018, to provide new overhead traffic signal lanterns at the Lower King Street intersection with the Bruce Highway northbound ramps and install queue-activated flashing sign to warn of congestion on the eastbound approach to the Bruce Highway interchange. 

Stage 2 works were completed in June 2020 to relocate the existing power poles further away from the westbound lanes of Lower King Street and reinstate street lighting at various locations.

Lower King Street between Dux Street and Charles Street

Right-turns at side roads and driveways on Lower King Street were removed between Mewett and William streets. Traffic data showed most residents and road users already turned left during peak periods, as there were no gaps for right-turns. This arrangement was formalised by providing double lines on Lower King Street.

A new U-turn facility was installed at the Charles Street traffic signals for passenger vehicles.

King Street at the Lakes Centre business precinct entrance

Works were completed in March 2019 to improve safety by extending the raised centre median to prevent right-turn movements from the Lakes Centre to King Street. The department investigated and determined there will be minimal impact for businesses and customers as a result of this safety improvement project. Alternate and safer exit options to King Street are available via Esme Avenue and the traffic signals at either Morayfield Road or Alfred Street. 

Importantly, right-turn movements into the Lakes Centre from King Street remain in place for eastbound motorists. 

King Street at the George Street and Caboolture Square Shopping Centre intersection 

Construction was completed in June 2020 to improve safety by: 

• providing dedicated signal phases for right-turns from King Street into George Street and the shopping centre
• extending the right-turn lanes on King Street to provide extra traffic storage. 

King Street intersection with Wararba Crescent and Lynfield Drive

In response to community feedback about the safety and operation of this intersection, the department extended the raised centre median on King Street to prevent unsafe right-turns into and out of Wararba Crescent. This will reduce the risk of crashes at the intersection and formalise right-turns from King Street into Lynfield Drive. 

A new U-turn facility was provided around 100m west of the intersection for residents travelling from Wararba Crescent to Caboolture. Another U-turn facility was provided, as part of an adjacent development, at the King Street / Watt Street intersection for residents travelling from the D’Aguilar Highway to Wararba Crescent. 

King Street near Devantier Road

To improve visibility, safety improvement works to widen and realign the curve on King Street near Devantier Road began in August 2018 and were completed in February 2019.  

King Street between Williams Road and the D'Aguilar Highway

Safety improvement works on King Street between Williams Road and the D’Aguilar Highway were completed in February 2018. 
Works included: 

• providing a raised median at the King Street/Williams Road intersection 
• realigning the left-turn from King Street to the D’Aguilar Highway 
• These works have improved visibility and provided a safe speed environment for road users along this section. 

Road signage improvements 

An audit of existing road signs along Lower King Street and King Street between the Bruce Highway and D’Aguilar Highway has been completed to ensure the signs comply with current design and safety standards. Between early and mid-2019, the department replaced, upgraded or removed signs at various locations on these roads.
