Old Cleveland Road Safety improvements: New Cleveland Road, Tinchborne Street and Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road intersections
This project will deliver safer intersections on Old Cleveland Road at New Cleveland Road, Tinchborne Street and Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road.
TMR is planning safety improvements on Old Cleveland Road at the intersections of New Cleveland Road, Tinchborne Street and Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road, Chandler.
The works will include closing the centre median and converting access to Tinchborne Street to be left-in/left-out only. Making this intersection left-in/left-out only will prevent road users from turning right across multiple lanes of traffic.
Benefits
- Improves safety
- Improves network efficiency
- Increases traffic flow
Key features
The proposed safety improvements include:
- closing the median at the intersection of Old Cleveland Road and Tinchborne Street
- installing new signage and line marking
- extending the right turn lane at the Old Cleveland Road and Mount Gravatt–Capalaba Road intersection. This will provide additional storage for road users wishing to use this intersection to perform a U-turn to access Tinchborne Street
- adding an additional dedicated right-turn lane on Old Cleveland Road onto New Cleveland Road and upgrading the slip lane entry from Old Cleveland Road onto New Cleveland Road.

Project location map
Inset A: Old Cleveland Road and New Cleveland Road intersection
Safety issues
A large number of rear-end crashes have been recorded at the intersection.
Proposed solution
Adding an additional dedicated right-turn land and upgrading the slip lane entry onto New Cleveland Road will improve safety for road users, pedestrians and bike riders.
Inset B: Tinchborne Street
Safety issues
Right-turn movements onto Old Cleveland Road present a high risk.
Proposed solution
Closing the centre median and converting access to Tinchborne Street to left-in/left-out only will improve safety as road users will not be able to turn right across multiple lanes of traffic.
Inset C: Old Cleveland Road U-turn at Mount Gravatt–Capalaba Road
Safety issues
During peak times this intersection sees high volumes of traffic turning right onto Mount Gravatt–Capalaba Road. Road users also regularly use this intersection to perform a U-turn onto Old Cleveland Road (travelling west).
Proposed solution
Extending the right-turn lane will provide additional storage for road users wanting to turn right or perform a U-turn to access Tinchborne Street.
