South Townsville Road (Railway Estate), Rooneys Bridge, rehabilitate bridge

Strengthening works are underway on Rooneys Bridge in Railway Estate, Townsville to repair concrete bridge piles.

While the works are underway, a 4.5t Gross Combination Mass load limit is in place across Rooneys Bridge.

The concrete piles that support the bridge have stood the test of time in the 72 years since the bridge was built. While the bridge is still structurally sound, if left untreated, the safety of the bridge would be compromised and access to vehicles would be restricted.

There are 68 piles supporting the bridge. Crews, including dive teams, will clean and inspect the piles, then cut out/break out loose or broken concrete pile sections before reinforcing with steel and concrete. Crews will be working on 1-2 piles at any given time and controls will be in place to ensure the bridge is safe.

During repair works, the load capacity of the bridge will be reduced and a 4.5t Gross Combination Mass load limit will be in place to prevent damaging the bridge.

Vehicles over 4.5t Gross Combination Mass include:

  • cars towing - including boats, caravans, and trailers
  • buses - both small and large
  • heavy vehicles - including trucks, semi-trailers, B-doubles.

Compliance inspectors are onsite to turn vehicles around that are over the load limit.

If your vehicle is over the limit, you will need to plan your trip via an alternative route. Visit www.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au to plan your trip.
