Property searches

A property search enables prospective purchasers of property to verify whether or not the department has, or may have, a land requirement for a specific property.  If an impact / land requirement is identified it would be in relation to transport and road infrastructure.

Frequently asked questions

Does a paper based system (for instance the form M831 Main Roads search request) still exist?

No, since 1 August 2011, all searches have been conducted electronically through one of the approved service providers (listed above).

What does a Transport and Main Roads property search cover?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads provides a single electronic property search that determines the land requirements against all transport projects, including railways, busways, cycleways, future passenger transport corridors, airports and state-controlled roads.

How long does a property search take?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will endeavour to complete property searches within 10 days, with about 80% being completed within 2 days.  If the property is in an active planning area, the property search will need to be forwarded on to the relevant project team for determination.

Which approved service provider should I use?

The approved service providers work directly with professional property services, such as a solicitor or conveyancing agent. It is recommended that you seek professional support for this type of transaction.

If you wish to perform your property search independently, ESS and SAI Global offer this service to members of the public.

Who do I contact if I have any further questions regarding property searches?

You can contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ Property Search Team on 1800 611 484*.

*Free call from anywhere in Australia, call charges apply for calls from mobile phones and payphones.
