Voluntary service optimisation scheme
The Department of Transport and Main Roads is actively encouraging school bus operators to review the services they operate to improve efficiency. Where operators voluntarily propose the amalgamation of services that improve overall efficiency and reduce the number of contracted buses needed in a given area, financial incentives will be available to qualifying services.
Please refer to the voluntary service optimisation scheme (PDF, 228 KB) information statement for more information.
School bus optimisation information for bus operators
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has established the School Bus Optimisation Project. The aim of this project is to improve the efficiency and viability of the school bus network in Queensland.

Important notice to school transport operators - changes to child restraints
The important notice to school transport operators (PDF, 98 KB) information statement is provided to clarify the requirements for school transport operators under the Queensland road rules and the Code of Conduct for School Students Travelling on Buses.
Information for conveyance committees
The Department of Transport and Main Roads enters into contracts with bus operators to operate kilometre-based school bus services. These services are funded by the Queensland Government through the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS) and are administered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in conjunction with conveyance committees.
The conveyance committee information booklet (PDF, 239 KB) contains details to assist conveyance committees in their important role.
Subsidised school bus services
Across the state, kilometre-based school bus services are provided to transport eligible school students to and from school. Normally these services are fully government funded. A small number of services, however, operate on the basis of only partial funding of the service by the government. The policy on the introduction and administration of subsidised school bus services (PDF, 162 KB) provides further information on these types of services.
