Excess mass and dimension conditions

Conditions of operations

Vehicles operating under excess mass and/or excess dimension guidelines or permits can potentially damage the road infrastructure and effect the safety of other road users.

To reduce the risks associated with the use of these vehicles, conditions of operation may be imposed on their operation.

General conditions of operation are included in the excess mass and excess dimension guidelines available from the NHVR Transitional Notices page. Conditions of operation for specific operations are issued with excess mass permits and Letters of No Objection (LONO).

Conditions of operation are maintained in the Conditions of Operation Database, including the latest changes and updates to the conditions.

Warning: it is the operator's responsibility to ensure compliance with current conditions of operation by checking the Conditions of Operation database before each trip.

Through this database operators may find out about:

  • conditions for a particular excess mass permit/LONO
  • Queensland-wide conditions of operation applicable between 2 selected dates
  • Queensland-wide conditions have changed since a selected date
  • all conditions recorded in database.

Note: due to regional government amalgamations, the department is currently transitioning from a district to a regional based structure that is consistent with the new local government boundaries. Until this transition is complete, the Conditions of Operation Database will refer to the older district boundaries maps.

The state-controlled road network is also available for route planning.

High and wide load restrictions due to major road works

The Excess dimension guidelines require transport operators to assess the suitability of their proposed route before movement of the load.

During major infrastructure upgrades, the movement of high and wide loads may be restricted.

Due to the continually varying nature of these restrictions, transport operators with high or wide loads are advised to use the links below to access information on our major projects.

Heavy mobile cranes and special purpose vehicles in the Intelligent Access Program (IAP)

From 1 June 2017, Intelligent Access Program (IAP) monitoring is mandatory for some heavy mobile cranes and SPVs that are eligible for excess mass permits of extended duration and increased road network access.

Permits issued for Class 1 and IAP Class 2 heavy mobile cranes and special purpose vehicles include conditions for specified structures that must not be crossed or structures that can be crossed if the appropriate single trip permit is obtained.
