Long distance air services

An aeroplane

Normanton Aerodrome has been closed to all commercial flights between 25 April and 31 May 2016 to allow the Carpentaria Shire Council to undertake necessary airport works to the runway, taxiway and apron. During the closure, all regular Rex Gulf route services will operate to/from Karumba airport.

Passengers are advised to contact Regional Express on 13 17 13 for more information.

From 1 January 2015, changes were made to government-regulated air services with the commencement of new operator contracts.

This is a result of the review of long distance air, coach and rail services during 2013 and the competitive open tender process for new air and coach contracts during 2014. There are no changes to rail services.

Regional air services

Following an extensive competitive open tender process during 2014, some regional air routes were deregulated and others are now operated by new operators.

There were some changes to timetables and Toowoomba passengers now need to access services from the new Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba.

Regulated air services

From 1 January 2015, some operators have changed on the following regulated routes.

Deregulated air services

As part of the review of air services, it was announced that three routes would be deregulated from 1 January 2015. By removing the government-regulation, other operators are able to enter the market, encouraging lower and more competitive airfares for customers. This includes flights to and from these locations:

  • Cairns-Weipa
  • Cairns-Horn Island
  • Townsville-Cloncurry-Mount Isa.
