Veloway 1, Pacific Motorway

Overview:

The Veloway 1 (V1) is planned to connect cyclists from Brisbane city to the Gateway Motorway off-ramp at Eight Mile Plains (along Pacific Motorway). A dedicated 3m wide cycleway will extend 17km, providing a safe route for commuting cyclists. The Veloway is being delivered in stages.

The 17km connection will successfully provide the missing links within existing cycleway and ensure a safe and dedicated commute for cyclists. The V1 will help promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

The V1 has been divided into 5 stages, with 3 of these stages already complete and in use.

The Veloway 1 map shows construction progress along the Veloway.

Veloway 1 sections include:

Stage A

Location: Logan Road (exit 14) to Miles Platting Road, Eight Mile Plains.
Status: Complete and in use.

Stage B

Location: Miles Platting Road to Gateway Motorway off-ramp, Eight Mile Plains.
Status: Complete and in use.

Stage C

Location: Lewisham Street, Greenslopes to Birdwood Road, Holland Park West.
Status: Complete and in use.

Stage D – Section 1

Location: Juliette Street on ramp and Lewisham Street, Greenslopes.
Status: Complete – not in use.

Stage D – Section 2

Location: Juliette Street, Greenslopes
Status: Construction commenced in January 2016
Due for completion: Late 2016

Stage D – Section 3

Location: Cornwall Street, Greenslopes
Status: In design phase
Due for completion: Late 2017

Stage D – Section 4

Location: O’Keefe Street, Buranda
Status: Construction commenced in January 2016
Due for completion: Late 2016.

Stage D is divided into 4 sections. When each section is complete, Stage D will run between O’Keefe Street, Woolloongabba and Lewisham Street, Greenslopes.

Stage D will not be open to cyclists until all 4 sections are completed. This stage will be constructed in the existing road corridor with the alignment sitting between the Pacific Motorway and the South East Busway.

Stage D is due for completion in late 2017.

Construction impacts

Construction of the Veloway 1’s Stage D – Sections  2 and 4 commenced in January 2016 with expected completion due in late August 2016, weather and construction conditions permitting. Works are expected to be carried out Monday to Saturday between 7am and 5pm, weather and construction conditions permitting. Some night works will also be required.

Changed traffic conditions include lane closures on Juliette Street, Greenslopes and O’Keefe Street, Buranda. Traffic controllers, police and road signage will be in place when required.

Other impacts include dust, noise and lights from construction equipment, reversing vehicles and activities on site. Residents will be notified in advance of any night works. Cyclist and pedestrian detours will be in place on Juliette and O’Keefe Streets.

Bridge works - Wednesday 3 August to Tuesday 23 August 2016 between 7pm to 5am

As part of the construction of the Veloway 1 cycleway (Stage D), bridge works are required from Wednesday 3 August to Tuesday 23 August 2016 between 7pm to 5am, weather and construction conditions permitting.

If works are delayed they will be undertaken at the next available opportunity.

These night works at Juliette Street, Greenslopes (between Marquis Street and Duke Street intersections) will involve the delivery of steel bridge girders by an oversized vehicle and placement onto the bridge piers by cranes, concrete pouring and general bridge works. 

The Veloway 1 is a critical and high quality commuter cycle facility that is more direct, has better connectivity, and is a safer off-road option for cyclists between the CBD and Eight Mile Plains. When complete, Stage D will include bridges over Lewisham Street, Juliette Street and Cornwall Street, Greenslopes with a ramp down to O’Keefe Street, Buranda.

Major works schedule 

Girder delivery and placement: 3 nights between 7pm to 5am

Saturday 6 August to Monday 8 August 2016 (weather and construction conditions permitting) 

On each of these nights, a steel girder will be delivered by an oversized vehicle with police escorts. This will be lifted onto the bridge piers by cranes which will be assembled and disassembled each night so the road can be cleared for traffic by 5am.

Impacts for motorists and residents includes:

  • reduced lanes on Marquis Street and Juliette Street
  • no right turn from Marquis Street onto Juliette Street
  • full road closure of Juliette Street underneath the Pacific Motorway and South East Busway
  • full closure of Juliette Street on-ramp (southbound). Motorists heading north and southbound are advised to continue south along on Marquis Street with guidance from traffic controllers an signage
  • detours and diversions - signage and traffic controllers will be in place from 7pm to 5am
  • partial lane closure on the Pacific Motorway (southbound) on Saturday 6 August 2016 only
  • lighting, noise, dust and vibration from machinery and construction equipment. 

Marquis Street residents (numbers 8 to 34)
There will be reduced lanes operating outside numbers 8 to 34 Marquis Street.

Juliette Street residents (numbers 86 to 128)
There will be lane closures outside numbers 86 to 98 Juliette Street with construction vehicles parked in the centre lanes of this section. There will be traffic controllers on site to assist vehicles entering and exiting these premises. There will be reduced lanes operating outside numbers 98 to 128 Juliette Street.

Concrete pouring: approximately 6 nights between 7pm to 5am (excl. Friday and Saturday night) 

Wednesday 17 August to Tuesday 23 August (weather and construction conditions permitting)

During this period concrete will be poured onto the newly placed bridge girders. 

Impacts for motorists and residents includes:

  • partial lane closure on Juliette Street on-ramp (southbound)
  • lighting, noise, dust and vibration from machinery and construction equipment.

Girder delivery and placement – traffic detours and diversions

The below detours are for motorists heading northbound and southbound from Marquis Street or Juliette Street, Greenslopes during night works on Saturday 6, Sunday 7 and Monday 8 August 2016. Traffic Control, police and signage will be in place to redirect traffic to detours. Motorists may experience minor delays.

Motorists heading northbound on Pacific Motorway:

  • turn left onto Marquis Street
  • turn left onto Victoria Terrace
  • turn right onto Earl Street/ Lewisham Street
  • turn right onto View Street/Duke Street
  • continue through to Juliette Street intersection and turn left to continue journey.

Motorists heading southbound on Pacific Motorway:

  • turn left onto Marquis Street and then left onto Victoria Terrace
  • turn right onto Earl Street
  • turn left onto Ridge Street and continue on to Logan Road, Greenslopes
  • turn right onto Logan Road and continue to Logan Road and Nursery Road intersection, Mount Gravatt
  • turn Right at Nursery Road, Mount Gravatt and continue along Nursery Road to Gaza Road
  • turn left off Gaza Road onto Messines Ridge Road and take the Pacific Motorway on-ramp to continue southbound.

Status: Finalising alignment
Due for completion: Subject to funding.

Existing cycleways

Cyclists can continue to use a combination of the completed V1 cycleway and existing shared paths.
