The Department of Transport and Main Roads works alongside a number of important stakeholders in the rail industry.

  • The Australasian Centre for Rail Innovation has been established to undertake or facilitate targeted, applied research to solve issues raised by rail industry participants or other parties involved in the rail or other transport sectors.
  • The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is an independent Commonwealth Government statutory Agency separate from transport regulators, policy makers and service providers. The bureau's function is to improve safety and public confidence in the aviation, marine and rail modes of transport.
  • The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator is an independent body corporate designed to encourage and enforce safe railway operations to promote and improve national rail safety.
  • The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board is a not for profit company that was established to develop, manage and promote a suite of standards to assist in rail safety, provide independent technical advice and work collaboratively with the Australian rail industry to harmonise safety practices across the country.
  • The TrackSAFE Foundation was established by the Australian rail industry to reduce near collisions, injuries and fatalities on the rail network.
