Public transport infrastructure grants

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is committed to creating a single integrated transport network accessible to everyone.

As part of this commitment, we offer funding grants to local councils across Queensland to upgrade passenger transport infrastructure to improve customer safety, accessibility and comfort.

Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Program (PTAIP)

The Passenger Transport Accessible Infrastructure Program (PTAIP) provides funding assistance to local councils to upgrade existing passenger transport facilities to ensure they comply with Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) (1992) requirements.

Since inception, PTAIP has provided more than $29 million in funding to councils across Queensland to upgrade their public transport infrastructure, including urban bus stops and long-distance coach stops.

Grants are also available for improvements to ferry pontoons/jetties and remote aerodrome terminals.

TMR invite local councils to submit their applications in September each year and, if approved for funding, applicants receive a 50% contribution towards the total cost of making the transport infrastructure accessible.

Bus Stop Shelter Program (BSSP)

The Bus Stop Shelter Program (BSSP) allows local councils to apply for funding to install bus stop shelters at approved locations across Queensland.

Bus stops eligible for funding must meet DDA and Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport (DSAPT) (2002) standards and be serviced by a TransLink or qconnect urban bus route, or a state government regulated long distance coach service.

When nominating bus stops for the program, councils consider a variety of customer factors including community feedback, passenger boarding numbers and frequency of services. Consideration is also given to planned road upgrades, current physical environment, and the feasibility of installing a bus stop shelter.

TMR invite applications in September each year and if successful, applicants receive a fixed funding grant of $19,000 (ex GST) per approved bus stop shelter.
