Building a strong culture
Working for Queensland
The Working for Queensland survey provides an opportunity for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to help shape the future of the Queensland public service, while improving employees' work experience.
Survey results inform the focus on enhancing employee engagement and building a positive workplace culture, strategy development, and resource investment.
In 2024, TMR achieved a record rate of completion with 75 per cent of employees and contractors responding to the Working for Queensland survey. The results showed that TMR is more engaged than the sector average across multiple areas, with strengths including:
- good support from your working group
- managers and supervisors that show honesty and integrity
- a clear understanding of how your work contributes to TMR's strategic objectives
- the flexibility to manage your work life and personal life effectively
- a strong awareness of health and safety obligations at work.
To address survey result actions, conversations are continuing in relation to key initiatives, with a focus on:
- employee wellbeing
- fair and equitable treatment
- professional development
- leadership development
- performance management
- workload management
- bullying and harassment.
Survey results continue to assist TMR in identifying local opportunities to improve employee engagement.
CUBIE Awards
The CUBIE Awards are TMR's annual recognition program that acknowledges achievements and behaviours aligned to the five Public Sector values. In November 2024, the annual CUBIE Awards were held for the eleventh year. CUBIE candidates are nominated by their peers and managers based on their demonstrated commitment to these values.
Winners were awarded in seven categories, with an additional Director-General all-rounder award. These were:
- Customers First
- Unleash potential
- Be courageous
- Ideas into action
- Empower people
- OneTMR individual
- OneTMR team
- Director-General's all-rounder
A total of 1454 individuals and teams were nominated for a CUBIE Award by their peers, customers, and managers. In 2024, the OneTMR and Empower People values received the greatest number of nominations.
The winners of TMR's CUBIE Awards are decided after progressing through branch awards during People4People Week, whole-of-TMR shortlisting by the Values and Culture Network, and to the final judging panel convened by the Director-General.
People4People Week is an annual celebration of the role TMR's people, relationships, shared values, and culture play. Each Branch celebrates People4People Week locally with activities designed to promote recognition, team building, and fun.
The event had a 62 per cent increase in registrations year-on-year with 2024 having 626, compared to 469 registrations in 2023. According to past event data, this is the highest level of registrations since 2017.
The 2024 CUBIE Awards ceremony was held in Brisbane and livestreamed to employees across Queensland. A total of 888 people attended the event, 170 in-person and 718 online.
