About operator accreditations

Under section 12(1) of the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 an operator of a public passenger service of a particular kind must attain and maintain operator accreditation to provide a service of that kind in Queensland.

A public passenger service is a service for the carriage of passengers if:

  • the service is provided for fare or other consideration, or
  • the service is provided in the course of a trade or business, or
  • the service is a community or courtesy transport service.

The purpose of operator accreditation is to encourage the high quality operation of public passenger services and hold service operators accountable for complying with appropriate standards and legislative responsibilities.

There are different categories of operator accreditation. These include:

  • scheduled services, including urban, minor, school and long distance
  • motorcycle tourist services
  • community transport services
  • courtesy transport services
  • general services, including any passenger transport service requiring OA that does not fit into another category of OA.

To obtain operator accreditation you must complete the necessary training requirements. This is a requirement under Section 19 of the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Standard 2010. Refer to our Training requirements page.

Various legislative requirements are or may be relevant to holders of operator accreditation.

If you arrange bookings for a personalised transport service (such as a taxi, limousine or ride-booking vehicle with no more than 12 seats including the driver) you need to obtain a booking entity authorisation.
