Mount Isa Line Incentive Scheme

The Mount Isa Line Incentive Scheme has finished.

The Mount Isa train line is important for North Queensland's economy and making it more efficient and cost effective is important to support and grow resources exports in the region.

To encourage more freight onto rail, the Queensland Government provided $80 million over 4 years ($20 million per year). The Mount Isa Line Incentive Scheme began on 1 July 2019 and finished on 30 June 2023. The goal of the scheme was to make rail freight more competitive with the intention to provide operational and financial benefit to eligible customers.

Eligible customers under the scheme:

  • existing mining operators
  • new freight, including mining and intermodal services.

Customers that were not eligible under the scheme:

  • livestock services
  • passenger train services
  • non-revenue train movements.

While the Mount Isa Line Incentive Scheme has finished, we continue to explore opportunities to move more freight onto rail via the Mount Isa line.
