Vehicular access to state-controlled roads policy
The Vehicular access to state-controlled roads policy outlines how the department:
- makes decisions about vehicle access to state-controlled roads from adjacent land
- assesses applications for new or changes to vehicle access, such as a driveway.
Read more about the department's role in planning and assessment of development or the activities we regulate and approve under the Transport Infrastructure Act 1994.
Purpose
Managing vehicle access to state-controlled roads is important because:
- it provides safety for road users
- it supports efficiency of the road network.
Any change to vehicle access can pose safety and efficiency risks to the road or wider road network.
The policy ensures people and freight can move around the state-controlled road network safely and efficiently. It also protects current infrastructure and future updates to the state-controlled road network.
Policy principles
Vehicular access to, or near a state-controlled road must:
- not compromise safety of the state-controlled road network or other transport infrastructure
- be consistent with the functional requirements of the state-controlled road
- be consistent with the current or planned intent for the state-controlled road.
