Get smart with crossings

An example of a smart pedestrian crossing from the AGD 326 Product Manual. People are safely crossing the road as cars and buses wait.

Action 2.4, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024

Department/Agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Evaluate results from Department of Transport and Main Roads smart crossings pilots and roll the technology out across the state.

Overview

Smart crossings use sensors. They adjust crossing times based on detected movement from people. The department has installed the tech at over 100 signalised crossings at 60+ sites in Queensland.

Achievements

Smart crossings are demand-responsive. People moving slower benefit from extra time to cross the road safely and comfortably. They reduce crossing time for people moving faster. This reduces delays for motorists. Smart crossings improve our network for all path and road users.

The department has installed smart crossings at over 60 sites in Queensland, including:

  • Cairns
  • Mareeba
  • Mackay
  • Bundaberg
  • Gold Coast
  • Logan
  • Ipswich
  • Western Downs
  • Brisbane.

In October 2023, the department assessed the performance of smart crossings. The findings show the technology reliably adjusts crossing time based on needs.
