Traineeships
As Transport and Main Roads traineeship gives you the opportunity to combine employment and structured training while completing a nationally recognised qualification.
A trainee is someone who is being trained in a vocational area. These vocational areas may include office administration and civil construction.
Upon completion of a traineeship you will be eligible to receive a minimum of a certificate II in your chosen vocational area.

Traineeship roles
Traineeships vary in length from 12 months to 3 years and may be provided in the following disciplines:
- civil construction—be trained in areas such as road maintenance, new civil works and rehabilitation of the road network
- administration—work in a variety of areas including project support and general administration.
Our current trainee programs
We offer a 2-year school-based traineeship to students who identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, enrolled and attending a registered school.
RoadTek plays a valuable role in building and maintaining Queensland’s extensive road and bridge network, as well as other civil construction projects. We offer employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.
Trainees are engaged across the state and undertake a variety of nationally recognised civil construction-related qualifications over many streams, including:
- road maintenance
- plant operator
- electrical installation
- line marking
- traffic management.
Civil construction traineeships are in place across RoadTek’s 9 operations units throughout Queensland and offer both ongoing employment and training opportunities to Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
These apprenticeships and traineeships provide a comprehensive mix of educational and ‘on-the-job’ training and participants can choose to obtain Heavy Rigid Truck and Plant Equipment licences.

In partnership with Community Solutions Group, the Women in Construction Program offers women an opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience to start a career in the construction industry, through a formal Civil Construction Traineeship delivered by Major Training.
Working towards addressing the gender imbalance in the construction industry, RoadTek developed the Women in Construction Program, now in its ninth cohort. The Women in Construction Program is intended for women of any age group or cultural background for civil construction roles across RoadTek’s 9 state-wide operations units. Previous or existing civil construction experience is preferred, but is not essential.
Successful candidates will be signed on to a full time traineeship, which includes an intensive 3-week induction in Brisbane. Participants will undertake training and assessment for selected core units of a Certificate III in Civil Construction. This valuable theory and practical learning experience will be conducted on a controlled, safe worksite and sets candidates up for permanent placement into RoadTek’s local Operations Units.
This program is designed to empower women to complete a formal qualification and open possibilities of forging diverse careers in the civil construction industry.
