A better Bruce Highway

The Bruce Highway is Queensland’s most vital transport route, stretching 1,673km from Brisbane to Cairns. It connects our communities and families, while supporting businesses and essential freight movements up and down the coast. The highway is a key part of life in Queensland and a driver of our economic success.

With an ongoing focus on building a better Bruce Highway, significant work in recent years has created a vision, plan and delivery program to ensure the highway is well positioned to receive the right investment in the right areas at the right time.

Upgrade highlights

As a critical transportation route, the Bruce Highway is the main focus of a major long-term safety and upgrade program. Key priorities include:

  • Bruce Highway Vision and Action Plans—The 15-year Vision and Action Plans for the Bruce Highway are part of our ongoing commitment to prioritise funding investment to support the highway.
  • Bruce Highway Upgrade Program—Started in 2013, the upgrade program is the Bruce Highway’s core infrastructure investment program and aims to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity.
  • Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program—Announced in 2025, the program aims to improve safety on the Bruce Highway by reducing fatal and serious injury crashes. It also focuses to enhance liveability for regional Queensland and reduce the economic and social costs of road related fatalities and serious injuries.
  • Bruce Highway Advisory Council—Re-established in late 2024, the Council is made up of peak industry bodies, regional representatives and senior government officials. The Council will advise on the current challenges and opportunities, as well as investment priorities for key upgrades along the Bruce Highway.
