Innovative approaches to structures inspections

RoadTek is trialling the use of innovative new technology for undertaking inspections on structures that are difficult to access (due to safety, cost or access limits). Technology currently being trialled includes:

  • remotely piloted aircraft systems—for structures with limited access such as long-span bridges for which conventional access is not feasible (for example, using elevated work platforms), and off-shore marine structures
  • remote-controlled submersible self-propelled inspection device—for submerged structures and other underwater structure components which are normally only accessible by divers
  • remote controlled vehicles equipped with lighting and light-weight high-resolution cameras—for the inspection of small diameter culverts.

Incorporating new technology into the inspection program has a number of benefits over traditional inspection methods, and has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of inspections for structures and structure components that have otherwise been difficult or dangerous to access.
