Cadetships
Our cadetships offer you employment while paying for you to complete your studies. You will be paid a competitive salary and receive financial support for your studies.
There are 2 types of cadetships:
- Full time work and part-time study
- Part time work and full-time study
All Cadet positions are offered on a full-time permanent basis, however dependant on the individuals specific study needs this can be negotiated upon commencement.

Cadetship roles
Cadetships are available across Queensland in these roles:
As a cadet civil construction technician, you could be involved in some of the state’s largest and exciting construction projects. Cadet construction technicians are provided training and experience in the construction of road transport infrastructure projects. You will have opportunities to be a part of various projects and services, such as:
- road construction, maintenance and rehabilitation
- structure construction, maintenance and rehabilitation
- project management fundamentals
- electrical services and digital infrastructure
- line marking services
- emergency and incident response to disruptive events and infrastructure failures.
What a civil construction technician does
Civil construction technicians play a key role in delivery civil works, gaining valuable experience in building and managing road infrastructure projects. Throughout their cadetship, they will be exposed to all facets of a project including quality control, traffic management, environmental considerations, safety protocols, engineering standards, project financial aspects and construction practices.

Personal requirements for a civil construction technician
- A willingness to:
- work in various work and environmental conditions and travel to project sites as required
- learn by gaining new skills and knowledge through training and hands on experience.

Pathway requirements
To be eligible for a civil construction technician, you will be required to enrol into the Associate Degree of Engineering (Civil).
As a civil designer with us, you will contribute to infrastructure and construction projects by working in a team environment supporting professional engineers to provide design and technical support from project inception to completion.
What a civil designer does
Civil designers use project management practices to deliver designs that are achieved using computer-aided design and drafting (CAD) programs. These are used to produce scale drawings from project models for construction projects.
Our projects often involve the design and drafting of bridges, earthworks, retaining structures, drainage, intelligent transport systems and traffic management.
Civil design cadetship benefits

- Contribute to the preparation of contract documents, determining construction costs, and safety in built infrastructure
- Learn awareness of cultural heritage, impacts on the environment, and ensuring the needs of the community are considered
- Assess the needs of the state-controlled road and infrastructure network to ensure it meets public expectations
- Present road planning and design recommendations to the community, service providers and other stakeholders
Personal requirements for a civil designer
You're interested in preparing technical drawings and using CAD and 3D modelling software such as 12D. You enjoy solving problems, applying analytical skills and finding ways to benefit the community. You're also willing to share new ideas and reach your full potential.
Pathway requirement
To be eligible for a civil design cadetship you must be enrolled, eligible to be enrolled, or studying one of these associate degrees:
- TAFE—Associate Degree in Civil Engineering
- UniSQ—Associate Degree of Engineering (Civil Engineering)
- CQU—Associate Degree of Engineering (Civil)
Study of a more advanced qualification, such as Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering Technology, will also be considered.
As a cultural heritage cadet, you will learn how to provide guidance and expertise in cultural heritage for our projects.
What a cultural heritage cadet does
The cultural heritage cadet will work in the office and out in the field supporting road projects to identify and protect indigenous, historical, shared and natural heritage.
This includes material remains such as artefacts, places and built structures, documentary records and works of art and non-material culture such as dreamtime stories, ideas, memories and practices. Our projects involve cultural heritage assessments, understanding legislation and community consultation during the planning and delivery of road projects.

The cadetship will give you practical situations where you will be required to work with 2 major pieces of legislation that govern cultural heritage in Queensland:
- Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003—recognises that Aboriginals are the primary guardians of their Cultural Heritage
- Queensland Heritage Act 1992—creates and protects the Queensland Heritage Register, which lists significant historical places in Queensland's history
Personal requirements for a cultural heritage officer
As part of the cadetship, you will enjoy researching, sharing knowledge, applying analytical skills and finding solutions that benefit the community.
Pathway requirement
To be eligible for a cultural heritage cadetship you must be enrolled, eligible to be enrolled, or studying a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor in:
- archaeology
- anthropology
- First Nations studies
- heritage or heritage management
- conservation
- social science.
As a cadet spatial science officer, you will learn to perform a variety of tasks including creating maps, undertaking spatial data analysis, and producing project specific online maps and dashboards. You will be involved in work that contributes to planning, designing, constructing, and managing the transport and road network.
What a spatial science officer does
A cadet spatial science officer works alongside technical experts to use geographic data to better understand our world. This information helps make informed decisions and addresses various challenges across a wide range of fields, including road planning and transportation responses.
Data collection could include terrain, land use, infrastructure, underground services, and environmental features using new innovative technology and research skills to improve your knowledge in this rewarding career.
Our projects involve spatial analysis that examine geographic patterns, relationships, and trends within the GIS platform, for use in planning and delivery of road projects.
Spatial science officer cadetship benefits

If you’re naturally curious, skilled at mathematics, interested in technology and you like dealing with data, this may be the career for you.
Working individually and as part of a team, you’ll need to be detail-oriented with great problem-solving skills and have strong analytical and communication skills.
Pathway requirements
To be eligible for a spatial science officer cadetship, you must be studying, enrolled, or eligible to be enrolled in one of these qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science) at UniSQ
- Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science at UniSQ
- A suitable equivalent qualification as determined by the department. Enrolment in an Associate Degree in Geospatial Science may also be considered with the requirement to upgrade to a bachelor's degree
As a cadet materials technician, you will contribute to infrastructure and construction projects by working in a team environment, ensuring projects are constructed with the highest quality materials.
What a materials technician does
A materials technician is involved in the sampling and testing of soil, aggregate, concrete, bitumen, and asphalt used in road transport infrastructure construction, and will gain experience in the operation and calibration of state-of-the-art testing equipment.
Technicians test materials to check compliance with earthworks, pavement, and structures design standards, while investigating material faults and failures.
Technicians also support research and development projects aimed at improving the quality of existing materials and the revision of specifications and test methods.
Materials technician cadetship benefits

Pathway requirement
To be eligible for a materials technician cadetship you must be enrolled, eligible to be enrolled, or studying with an Australian tertiary institution to complete an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent qualification, accredited under the Dublin Accord.

As a cadet surveyor, you will be involved in work that contributes to planning, designing, constructing, and managing the transport and road network. You will as well as performing a variety of tasks, from hands-on technical work to training, management, research, and development. You'll learn to accurately capture the road network, using a variety of survey tools which may include drones, and assist senior staff with project delivery.
What a surveyor does
Surveyors are experts at measurement and are skilled in analysing and presenting information about the world and the structures on it. They use these skills to carry out work such as determining property boundaries, preparing contour maps, or setting out the location of roads and buildings.
Surveyor cadetship benefits
- Acquire and validate geospatial information for planning, design, construction, and road corridor management
- Get involved with surveying principles and apply expertise in methodologies for locating, controlling, measuring and auditing road projects
- Work with the latest software, tools and surveying methods, such as laser scanning technologies, drones, GNSS and BIM modelling software
Personal requirements for a surveyor
If you’re good at mathematics, like working in the outdoors, and you're interested in technology, you may be the perfect candidate for a career as a surveyor.
As a surveyor you’ll work independently and as part of a team during a project. You’ll also need to be organised with great attention to detail and have strong communication skills.
Pathway requirements
To be eligible for a Surveyor Cadetship you must be enrolled, eligible to be enrolled, or studying one of these qualifications:- UniSQ—Bachelor of Surveying Technology
- UniSQ—Bachelor of Surveying (Honours)
- A suitable equivalent qualification as determined by the department.
