RoadTek working with Indigenous communities

RoadTek is a branch of Transport and Main Roads that delivers transport infrastructure solutions across Queensland, including civil construction and maintenance, structures, electrical and linemarking, supported by its own internal construction fleet.

Partnering with communities

RoadTek is partnering with Indigenous communities and training organisations to help develop self-sustainability through a number of occupational programs within the transport infrastructure industry. This includes working with Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander communities—such as Hopevale Aboriginal Shire Council who RoadTek worked with to seal the Endeavour Valley Road between Cooktown and Hopevale, and forming partnerships with Indigenous organisations such as not-for-profit Indigenous training organisation the Myuma Group in Northwest Queensland—providing training and support, and upskilling their employees by giving them on the job road construction and maintenance experience. 

This partnership approach enables Indigenous communities and organisations to become self-sufficient and can help them gain the necessary pre-qualifications to undertake civil construction and maintenance work.

Developing our people

RoadTek also provides development opportunities through a range of employee initiatives, including:

• upskilling Indigenous apprentices and trainees to attain their Certificate III in Construction
• enabling Indigenous trainees to participate in on-site training in plant and machinery including competency assessment processes 
• supporting and empowering Indigenous employees to progress through the RoadTek Civil Trades Development Program (CTDP). The CTDP provides a career path comprised of nationally recognised competencies and enables participants to develop critical frontline management, leadership, operational and project management capabilities.

RoadTek also actively works to attract and develop Indigenous workers, recruiting 26 new indigenous trainees throughout 2019.

Working with our suppliers

RoadTek encourages organisations within the construction industry to promote capability development. As part of this initiative RoadTek has modified major labour hire and traffic control procurement activities to include Indigenous organisations as part of the supplier evaluation process.
