Automatic counters with real time display
From late-May to 30 September 2023, we trialled automatic counter devices with real time display at 2 locations along the Principal Cycle Network in Brisbane. The trial has now been extended until March 2024.
The devices are located on the:
They count and display the total number of path users, including pedestrians, bicycle riders and other users, for the day and the year-to-date in real time.
Other useful information including safety information, time of day, temperature, and messages to encourage active transport were also displayed.
During the extended trial we will:
- collect count data to assess path usage and generate insights about how the Principal Cycle Network is performing. The count data will not be used for any other purposes and holds no personal identifiable information
- test new bike counter and display technologies, to inform potential rollout of counters with real time display to other locations across Queensland.
Community consultation, including a survey, closed on 30 September 2023.
About the counter at Veloway 1 in Woolloongabba
This innovative counter is a new product created in partnership with local Queensland businesses and the first to be trialled on Queensland pathways.
A camera captures images of objects and uses artificial intelligence to automatically detect different types of users, such as a person walking or a person riding a bike or personal mobility device.
The identities of path users are automatically hidden as each image is captured. Once the type of user has been detected and that data recorded, the image is deleted from the counter data store.
About the counter at Canon Garland Overpass near the Centenary Cycleway in Toowong
