Trialling automatic counter devices with real time display
Overview
Action 5.3: Investigate and trial new bike counter and display technologies and other methods to make count data available to the community. Continue to install bike counters and undertake surveys to understand and report on trends in infrastructure use, travel patterns and behaviour.
Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads
Status: Complete
Achievements
From July 2023 to March 2024, we trialled automatic counter devices with real time display at 2 locations along the Principal Cycle Network in Brisbane.
The devices were located on the:
- Veloway 1 in Woolloongabba
- Canon Garland Overpass at Centenary Cycleway in Toowong.
During the trial, we learned how suitable these technologies are for future sites on the pathway network. We based this on:
- user experience
- technology accuracy
- installation and maintenance costs
- reliability.
Next steps
A summary of the key findings from the trial and the next steps we are taking as a result of the trial is available on our Automatic transport counters with real time display page.
We are also installing counters at new places, like the Veloway 1 extension in Underwood. We have also upgraded all existing counters to 4G with the discontinuation of 3G services.
