Recognise high–quality urban design projects that support walking and cycling as part of the Minister’s Award for Urban Design.

Overview

The Office of the Queensland Government Architect celebrates exemplary new urban design projects in Queensland through the Minister’s Award for Urban Design.

In 2022, for the first time, the awards included a ‘Movement and Place’ category to acknowledge the significance of creating walkable environments as part of the overall design of places and movement through an area.

Achievements

The Office of the Queensland Government Architect hosts the Minister's Award for Urban Design to recognise outstanding urban design projects in Queensland.

To recognise the value of high–quality spaces including streets and public places, the awards program includes the Movement and Place Award

This category seeks nominations from projects that create walkable environments to support social, environmental and/or economic benefits.

In 2023, 2 projects shared the award: Logan Village Green Revitalisation with Logan Village to Yarrabilba Rail Trail.

The projects reimagined an underutilised parcel of open space and a disused rail spur to connect 2 distinct yet separate communities.

Collectively, both projects showcased a collaborative, place–based planning, design and delivery response that contextually responds to the emerging needs of the Logan Village and Yarrabilba communities and their environments.

Together, these projects exemplify the considerable environmental, economic and social benefits a well–considered ‘Movement and Place’ framework can deliver when applied consistently and thoughtfully from conception to delivery.

Next steps

The Minister's Award for Urban Design, including the Movement and Place Award, will be held in 2024.
