Support walking tours to encourage the community to explore their urban environment through the Open House Program across Queensland.

Overview

In 2022, the Office of Queensland Government Architect supported Brisbane's Open House program to deliver 2 new walking initiatives: Villages of Brisbane and Iconic Precincts.

Achievements

Open House is an international initiative that allows the public to access buildings that would normally be closed for general viewing. In 2022, Office of Queensland Government Architect supported the Brisbane Open House program, after 2 years of being interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 20,000 people took part in the program, exploring the city's buildings and places through both guided and self-guided tours, free of charge. The program emphasises walking and encourages participants to discover multiple precincts and buildings within walking distance.

The program introduced 2 new walking-based initiatives in 2022: The Villages of Brisbane showcased Sandgate and Shorncliffe, while Iconic Precincts featured Fish Lane in South Brisbane. The Villages of Brisbane showcase was predominantly a walking event, with more than 3,000 participants undertaking guided and self-guided tours.

With the support of over 200 volunteers, including the Brisbane Greeters, the Brisbane Open House is a community event that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. By encouraging walking and a deeper understanding of local places, the program builds on the culture of the city.

Next steps

Brisbane Open House plans to expand their program to include year-round guided walking tours, inspiring people to walk and discover their city any day of the year. Office of Queensland Government Architect will continue to work and support the program's development.

Office of Queensland Government Architect will also explore supporting Open House events in other parts of Queensland.
