Action 3.3, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024

Department/Agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Promote the road rules and educate Queenslanders about safe interactions between pedestrians and other road users as part of regular social media posts.

Overview

The department shares road rule information on our and StreetSmarts digital media channels, such as:

  • videos
  • diagrams
  • quizzes.

These posts educate Queenslanders about safe interactions between people walking and other road users. They aim to lead to positive changes in behaviours and attitudes.

Achievements

Every Monday morning, we publish a quiz on our Facebook page, each focusing on a different road rule. The interactive nature of social media creates an 'edu-tainment' environment for our audience. It encourages a positive change in their behaviour and attitudes to road rules and other road users. Sharing the road with vulnerable road users is a top priority.

One of our top-performing posts for 2022-24 featured the rules for giving way to people walking who are crossing a slip lane. It received over 1,200 comments and had an interaction rate of 26.81%. Our Queensland road rule quizzes have also gained national media recognition.

These posts reach Queenslanders in all areas, ensuring broad engagement and education. There has been no formal evaluation. But, these quizzes have sparked discussions. They helped our audience understand the road rules.

StreetSmarts posted multiple times about safe walking. It spent several months promoting active transport safety. In May 2024, a StreetSmarts video post showing children how to safely cross the road reached over 40,000 people.

A post urging people walking to stay safe by being alert and avoiding mobile phone use when crossing the road reached over 250,000 people across:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • TikTok

Next steps

We continue to be responsive to customer concerns and current trends. Social media is a great way to engage our audience and correct any road rule misconceptions. We are also looking at other ways to improve our road safety education for Queenslanders.
