On-board toilet

Toilet on an NGR train 

Until accessibility design changes are completed, each NGR train will have 1 on-board toilet located in the third or fourth car (depending on the direction of travel).

The toilet module includes a toilet, coat hook, mirror, baby change table, hand wash basin, soap dispenser, hand dryer, and 2 Emergency Help Points (EHPs).

Once the design changes are implemented there will be:

  • Interurban fleet—35 trains with 2 toilet modules (in the middle 2 cars) for longer distance services
  • Suburban fleet—40 trains with no toilets for shorter distance services.

Allocated spaces for mobility aids

There are a total of 12 allocated spaces for people who use mobility aids. These spaces are distributed over the middle 2 cars (third and fourth car) with 6 spaces in each car.

The spaces align with the assisted boarding point, which is available at the majority of stations on the South East Queensland rail network. 


All NGR trains will have Queensland Rail Wi-Fi available for passengers.

LCD display screens

In each of the 6 NGR cars, there will be 6 LCD display screens used for safety messaging, service information and advertising – as well as traditional static poster displays. The screens will be vision-only and will not have any sound.

NGR train safety and security features

The NGR trains have the following passenger safety and security features:

  • ‘call for assistance’ buttons in the third and fourth cars to alert the guard of a passenger requiring assistance
  • ‘Passenger Emergency Intercoms’ in each car that will alert the driver and guard of an emergency
  • internal and external CCTV cameras with movement sensors
  • smoke detection system that is designed to ensure early detection and containment of fire within the car
  • Crash Energy Management System designed to absorb energy in the event of a collision, reducing the impact on crew and passengers
  • high-backed seats designed to improve crash safety performance for passengers
  • maximised aisle widths with photo luminescent (or glow-in-the-dark) markings for emergency evacuations.

Size and capacity

Each 6-car NGR train will have a total passenger capacity of approximately 964 people, including 454 seated and 510 standing (depending on conditions).

The trains are about 147m long and weigh about 260 tonnes.


The NGR train will differ in appearance to the existing fleet with features including:

  • longer aerodynamic noses on the front and rear cars that completely enclose the train coupler (existing fleet have exposed train couplers)
  • smooth-sided exterior with a matte finish (existing fleet have a corrugated steel finish)
  • larger, single panel windows (existing rail fleet have smaller 2-panel windows)
  • high-backed seats for improved crash safety performance
  • overhead ‘dropper’ handles and seat handles for standing passengers
  • LED lighting
  • open gangways (doorways) fitted at each inter-car connection
  • new colour scheme and seat fabric that depicts the South East Queensland passenger rail network, developed by an award winning industrial design group.

European Train Control System (ETCS)

All NGR trains have been designed for the future installation of the European Train Control System (ETCS), an automatic train protection system, which would safely enable further network capacity increases.

Delivery into passenger service

Qtectic designed the NGR trains in Queensland and assembles them at a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Savli, India.

Once assembled, each NGR train travels via cargo vessel from the Port of Mumbai to the Port of Brisbane, where it is unloaded, assembled and hauled to the NGR Maintenance Centre at Wulkuraka. Each train then undergoes final routine testing to ensure the strict safety requirements are met, before being formally accepted and paid for by the Queensland Government. 

Some NGR trains may be temporarily stored in other locations, such as the Redbank Rail Workshops, before being rotated back to the NGR Maintenance Centre for final routine testing and formal acceptance. 

After each train has been formally accepted, they will continue to undergo reliability and performance runs across the network and be utilised for staff training and final operational readiness activities prior to their entry in to passenger service.  

Operation and maintenance

Queensland Rail will operate the NGR trains, and has undertaken a significant amount of planning and preparation to transition the new trains into daily operations. Department of Transport and Main Roads is working closely with Queensland Rail to ensure strict safety and performance standards are met.

The NGR trains will be maintained, serviced and repaired by Qtectic at the purpose-built NGR Maintenance Centre at Wulkuraka, west of Ipswich.

Queensland Rail will continue to maintain, service and repair the all other trains in the Queensland Rail fleet.

Deployment to the network

NGR trains are currently operating on the Gold Coast, Airport, Doomben and Northgate lines, and will be progressively rolled out across the entire South East Queensland passenger rail network.

Local Industry Participation Plan 

As part of the NGR project, Qtectic has developed and implemented a Local Industry Participation Plan as required by the Queensland Government under the Queensland Charter for Local Content. The plan sets targets to ensure local industries are being utilised. To date, Qtectic has let more than 250 contracts to Australian businesses including 83 across South East Queensland and 11 across regional Queensland.
