Project info

In 2005 the department completed planning for a proposed extension of the passenger rail line from Robina to Tugun. Additional planning for a further extension to the Gold Coast Airport was completed in 2009. Extending the Gold Coast line will improve public transport connections in the rapidly growing Gold Coast region.

Following community consultation, a preferred rail corridor between Robina and the Gold Coast Airport was identified and preserved. The first stage of this extension, between Robina and Varsity Lakes, was completed in 2009. The second stage, between Varsity Lakes and Elanora, and the third stage to the Gold Coast Airport will be constructed when existing capacity constraints on the Gold Coast line have been addressed. The Queensland State Infrastructure Plan confirms the Varsity Lakes to Elanora extension as part of long term planning, outside of the current program of works. The South East Queensland Rail Horizon report (2016) identified the Cross River Rail project as a priority to provide the necessary capacity for an expansion of the rail network. Construction of both projects is subject to funding and state-wide priorities.

Planning completed in 2009 investigated the technical, environmental, social and economic aspects of the extension.

Community info

Community interest in the proposed extension of the Gold Coast line remains high. We continue to work with Gold Coast City Council to ensure planning reflects community needs.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Gold Coast Line be extended to Tugun and Coolangatta?

Trains on the Gold Coast line are already near capacity, and an extension would contribute to over-crowding for passengers. The extension will only be constructed when additional passenger capacity has been created on the line. This is likely to be after construction of the Cross River Rail project. The South East Queensland Rail Horizon report confirmed the existing SEQ rail network will not have the capacity to expand into new areas until Cross River Rail has been completed.

Where will new train stations be located?

The proposed extension includes stations located at:

  • Tallebudgera
  • Elanora
  • Tugun
  • Coolangatta, in the Gold Coast Airport precinct.

How can I find out if my property is affected?

You can request a property search through an Approved Service Provider or review the DA mapping available online.
