Maximum payment surcharge

If receiving payment by card transaction, service providers may elect to charge a card surcharge. If a customer pays by card transaction, you may charge a card surcharge. This can be up to a maximum of 5% of the total fare (including GST).

Application of surcharge

The merchant surcharge for all card transactions in taxis is capped at a maximum of 5% of the total amount journey fare (including GST).

Payment surcharges for services provided in ride-booking and limousine vehicles will continue to be overseen by the Reserve Bank of Australia's Card Payments Regulation framework.

Penalty

It is an offence for a person to charge more than 5% of the fare for a card transaction in any of these services. A maximum penalty of $6,192 may apply.
