Certificate of inspection requirements for personalised transport vehicles

Taxis, limousines and ride-booking vehicles must have a certificate of inspection (COI) to ensure they meet minimum vehicle standards. A new vehicle during the first year of being registered or operating solely in an exempt area is exempted from this COI requirement. 

Getting a COI

  • Personalised transport vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less, will need a COI from an Approved Inspection Station (AIS) that can issue COIs electronically. To locate an AIS, use the Find an AIS service. Simply select ‘COI Light Motor Vehicle’ and tick the ‘Online inspection certificates (ICO)’ box to find the relevant AIS.
  • Personalised transport vehicles with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes must be inspected at a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) inspection site. All NHVR vehicle inspections must be booked and paid for in advance. To do this you can:
  • Personalised transport vehicles that are minibuses between 3.5 and 4.5 tonnes GVM have the option of obtaining a COI from an AIS or from the NHVR using the booking process above.
