Certificate of inspection requirements for personalised transport vehicles
All taxis, limousines and ride-booking vehicles are required to have a certificate of inspection (COI), unless exempt, to ensure they meet minimum vehicle standards. Vehicles are only exempt from the COI requirement if they are a new vehicle during the first year of being registered, or are operating solely in an exempt area.
Getting a COI
All taxi, limousine and ride-booking vehicles with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less can obtain their COI in two ways:
- An Approved Inspection Station (AIS) that can issue COI’s electronically. To find these within the Find an AIS service, select ‘COI Light Motor Vehicle’ and tick the box ‘Online inspection certificates (ICO) or;
- A vehicle inspection at a Transport and Main Roads inspection centre that offers vehicle inspections.
Vehicles with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes can only be inspected at a TMR Inspection Site.
