Central Queensland Beef Roads program

The Central Queensland Beef Roads program is a jointly funded initiative between the Australian and Queensland governments to seal beef corridors in Central Queensland that are critical to the Australian beef industry.

Upgrades will support the efficient and productive movement of industry supply chains and improve safety for all road users and resilience to weather events.

Early works package

Delivery of an early works package is underway. Projects include:

  • paving and sealing sections along Clermont - Alpha Road, west of Craven Road
  • paving and sealing sections along the Clermont - Alpha Road, east of Pioneer Road
  • paving, sealing and widening along Alpha - Tambo Road, northeast of Tumbar Road
  • paving and sealing in sections along the Fitzroy Developmental Road between Bauhinia and Duaringa
  • paving and sealing sections along May Downs Road between Middlemount and Clarke Creek.

Queensland Beef Corridors initiative

The Queensland Beef Corridors initiative is a collaborative advocacy campaign involving seven local government mayors within Central Queensland Region, which include the Barcaldine, Central Highlands, Gladstone, Isaac, Rockhampton Regional Councils and the Banana and Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Councils.

The Queensland Beef Corridors mayors have advocated for infrastructure investment to improve the roads forming part of the state’s beef supply chain.

Central Queensland Beef Roads Investment Strategy

In partnership with the Australian Government and seven local government mayors, the Queensland Government has developed a Central Queensland Beef Roads Investment Strategy. The investment strategy identifies short and medium-term investment priorities for delivery under the jointly funded commitment. Investment priorities have been informed by engagement with key stakeholders including transport operators and primary producers.

The investment strategy identifies investment priorities on the following eight state-controlled roads and one local government-controlled road in Central Queensland:

  • Clermont - Alpha Road
  • May Downs Road
  • Kilcummin - Diamond Downs Road
  • Alpha - Tambo Road (within Barcaldine Regional Council)
  • Dawson Developmental Road (within Central Highlands Regional Council)
  • Fitzroy Developmental Road (Taroom - Bauhinia)
  • Fitzroy Developmental Road (Bauhinia - Duaringa)
  • Duaringa - Apis Creek Road (within Central Highlands Regional and Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Councils)
  • Glenroy Road (Rockhampton Regional Council local government road).

Funding

The Queensland Government has committed $100 million towards a $500 million jointly funded program of works to progressively seal unsealed sections of roads on heavy vehicle corridors critical to the Australian beef industry. Rockhampton Regional Council will provide a local government co-contribution for works on the local government-controlled Glenroy Road.
