Angus Smith Drive, upgrade roundabout, planning and pre-construction
The Australian Government and Queensland Government are investing in planning and design for an upgrade of the Angus Smith Drive roundabout in Douglas.
The Angus Smith Drive roundabout is a key transport link serving Townsville University Hospital, James Cook University and surrounding employment and research precincts.
The existing roundabout experiences congestion during peak periods, resulting in delays for motorists and reducing the efficiency of the surrounding road network. The intersection also presents challenges for pedestrians, bike riders, public transport services and emergency vehicles accessing the hospital.
Planning and design will investigate options to improve safety, traffic flow and network reliability at the intersection. The project will support existing travel demand and the future growth in the precinct.

Current status
The project is in the planning phase, which includes detailed design, with the business case expected to be completed in late 2026.
